It’s hard for me to listen when the fam talks endlessly about Naomi. She left Ben; big fucking deal. She left me years ago…At least he got 9 years. All I got was one magical night.

It was the early days of my internship, and I was working long hard hours. Every day was exhausting and I felt completely burnt out. I barely had time to see anyone, let alone my family. I had given up all hope of having a girlfriend any time soon. I had just ended things with Chloe, we just didn’t have that hot connection, you know, the kind of red hot passion that make the world go round. I had almost given up on ever finding IT, on that day when my little brother Ben stopped by the hospital to say hi, and introduce me to his new girlfriend.

“Hey Sis,” Ben said, I could tell he was outside because of all the street sounds.

“Ben, what a surprise.”

“Turn around.”

When I did Ben was standing right behind me. He was almost done with college but he still looked like a little boy to me. On his arm was the most stunning blond woman I had ever seen. My first thought was ‘how could my baby brother score a chick like that?’ Then I thought about how I would like to hit that. Regina! She is you little brother’s girlfriend, she is off limits. That would just hurt everybody.

Then I was snaped back to reality by Ben’s voice, apparently he had been rattling on about something or other for the past several minutes.

“—And then he said that nobody was going to make Lord of the Rings into a movie and I said there was already an animated feature based on the Hobbit. And he said it probably sucked and I said he was a moron.”

The girl said, “Benny you shouldn’t talk to your brother that way. He seems really nice. He told me I had a perfect eye-to-face ratio.”

“Oh, Regina, I almost forgot. This is my new girlfriend Naomi.”

So she had a name. Naomi. Naomi. It sounded beautiful in my head. Naomi and Regina, Regina and Naomi.

I realized no one had spoken for awhile so I said, “So you met our brother. How was that?”

“Naomi liked him. But you know Ollie let’s just say he said some inappropriate things about Naomi’s bust.”

I could have said some inappropriate things myself.

Suddenly Ben’s cellphone started to chirp. “It’s Ollie. I should take this,” he said. “He said he might call me if he needed help setting up his new computer.”

As Ben walked down the hall Naomi and I made eye contact and sparks began to fly.

“So Regina, what kind of doctor are you going to be?”

“I’m going to work in the ER. It’s such a rush. Full of passion.” As I said the word passion, I thought I saw a glint in her eye, I didn’t know what it meant but I was intrigued.

“Hey do you have a break room? I could really use a . . . soda.”

At that point I was willing to take Naomi anywhere she was ready to go, so I led her to the break room.

“So Regina, Ben told me you’re a lesbian. I’m really into social justice. I feel the best way to understand other peoples struggles is to go and experience their experience. I spent last summer digging ditches with Venezuelan orphans, it really gave me insight into what their lives were like.”

I didn’t really know where Naomi was going with this, but I was even more intrigued as she drew closer to me until I could feel her hot breath on my cheek.

“I’m really interested in the struggles of gay people in America. I feel like you could help me understand better.”

All of a sudden she grabbed my lapels and dragged me into the most passionate kiss I have experienced. I knew it was wrong, but it felt so right. She pushed me onto the couch and jumped on top of me. I was in heaven, she was so soft and yet hard at the same time. The passion nearly burned me alive. I looked to the unlocked door and imagined one of my colleagues coming in. Or my boss, or BEN! Or even worse my MOTHER!!!

No one interrupted us and our encounter was over almost as quickly as it began.

Things between Naomi and Ben got more and more serious til they eventually married. Neither Naomi nor I ever brought up that magical night in the ER again. I never forgot though. Everytime I looked in her eyes I could have sworn I saw that same glint of passion.

I’ve had many women since her. But I have never felt that passion that burned so bright. Perhaps a passion that burns so bright was destined to burn too quickly.

When I heard Naomi’s voice on Ben’s answering machine I felt sorry for him I knew what it felt like to lose a woman so magnificent.
